do we need a king?

13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
Jesus’ life was in always in danger. When Herod found out he was a king, he wanted him dead. You see, this king threatened his throne, the presence of another potentially greater ruler might weaken his own power.
We all want power. We want to make our own decisions, we want to fight our own wars. maybe it’s pride, maybe its selfishness, maybe it’s just that we are too weak to believe there is a better king. Either way you cut it, we want the power for ourselves.
Unfortunately for Herod, and for us, there is a better king. A greater king. A more powerful and wise king.
How will you respond to that king? He is already ruling, so arguing about that is pointless. You can rebel against him, but he is still the king. Herod failed to kill him. Herod, the puppet that he was, was still much more powerful than you and me.
Herod failed.
How do you think you will do?
Recognize the king and submit to his rule. He is much wiser than you.
